I am an eclectic painter, perhaps fittingly described by many of the pejoratives for which the word "eclectic" can be a euphemism: unfocused, non-committal, ambivalent, meandering. That said, to be without a narrow and well defined direction in one's creative work is not the same as being lost. I don't feel lost.
I am, however, acutely aware of Painting's fragile status as a relevant medium for artistic expression and aesthetic inquiry in the 21st century. It is difficult to defend; that fact haunts me. But, I find solace and reassurance as a viewer of paintings --- new and old. Something in this ancient art form still speaks to me. It does not feel superstitious; but it is hard for one schooled in "the faith" to be objective about this. So I continue the ritual, repeat the liturgy, and search for evidence of its existence. KD
